How does NASCAR's new car factor into the penalties?
When questioned if
the fact that they were cutting-edge vehicles was a contributing factor, Moran
said, "partly to do with the cars and more restrictions surrounding the
vehicles."
"That's too bad. If we could avoid this meeting, we
would. What we saw just now was an amazing competition. No one wants to return
to this room to continue debating the matter after this point has been
made." In light of Moran's words. In other words, "all the teams are
well aware that we cannot be continuing down the route that we have in the past
with the old vehicles," and "everyone is well aware that this new car
was going to be kept with some pretty rigorous constraints."
How about Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch?
NASCAR announced
earlier today that Joe Gibbs Racing would not be appealing the
disqualifications, so Chase Elliott has been declared the winner.
The announcement confirmed that Hamlin and Busch are still
in the top 16 drivers and have a shot at making the playoffs despite their DQs
at Pocono.
Wally Brown, director of competition for Joe Gibbs Racing,
released a statement in which he said the team had discovered tape across the
lower corners of the fascia. The tape measured 2 inches broad by 5 1/2 inches
long and had a thickness of.012 inches.
Brown stated that the change to our construction procedure
was not properly vetted without our group and was therefore prohibited under
NASCAR regulations. We apologise for any trouble this has caused, and be
assured that we've done all possible to avoid it from happening again.
